The Reds took the lead against the run of play through Philippe Coutinho after Villa had dominated for the opening half an hour.
But the claret and blues were level six minutes later as Christian Benteke sidefooted home from Fabian Delph’s pass.
Provider then turned scorer early in the second half as Delph put Villa ahead with a fine finish from eight yards.
Villa continued to threaten on the counter-attack and were resolute at the back and saw the game out to spark jubilant scenes at the final whistle.
