PARIS, France – A pair of WTA Rising Stars pulled off the first big upsets of this year’s French Open, with Annika Beck taking out Agnieszka Radwanska and Sloane Stephens surprising Venus Williams.
The No.14-seeded Radwanska was the first of the star pair to fall, showing a mighty fightback in the second set but ultimately succumbing to the rock solid ground game of Beck in the third, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
It was Radwanska’s first time losing in the first round of a Grand Slam since all the way back at the 2009 Australian Open – but there might be better days just around the corner, just across the water.
The No.15-seeded Williams followed Radwanska to the sidelines later in the day, looking strong early on – even holding a 3-1 lead in the first set tie-break – but going quietly to Stephens, 7-6(5), 6-1.
