Bayern went closest to an early goal when Jerome Boateng hit the crossbar from an angle, but the biggest chance of the first half was squandered by Kevin De Bruyne, who placed his 15-yard effort wide of an open goal after Manuel Neuer had mistimed a dash off his line.
Arjen Robben had had a subdued game, but he put Bayern in front when Douglas Costa’s cross was fumbled out to him by Koen Casteels. Wolfsburg knocked at the door in search for an equaliser, with Bas Dost and De Bruyne both testing Neuer, before substitute Bendtner turned in De Bruyne’s cross in the last minute to force a penalty shoot-out. It was the Dane who converted the winning penalty too after Xabi Alonso missed from the spot.
