TORONTO, Canada – It wasn’t easy, but Serena Williams beat Flavia Pennetta to not only win her opening match at the Rogers Cup, but to score the milestone 725th match win of her illustrious career.
Though she had never lost in six previous meetings against Pennetta, Williams had had trouble against the Italian before, including having to claw her way back from a set and 3-0 down one time.
And the No.1-seeded Williams found herself in a lot of danger this time, too, finding herself down a set and a break, 6-2, 2-1. But like she’s done so many times in the past, and this year in particular, she found her A-game right when she needed it most, storming back to move through, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0.
