CINCINNATI, OH, USA – Serena Williams became the first player into the final of the Western & Southern Open, rallying from an early deficit to beat WTA Rising Star Elina Svitolina in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
The No.14-seeded Svitolina came in with momentum. She had taken out the No.7 seed, Lucie Safarova, in the quarterfinals, one of the biggest wins of her career, and she carried that form into this semifinal match, her big serve and groundstrokes propelling her to an early 3-1 lead right out of the gates.
But the No.1-seeded Williams sprung into action from there, winning 11 of the next 15 games to beat the hard-hitting Ukrainian, 6-4, 6-3, ripping an ace on match point – her 33rd winner of the match.
Williams is now a win away from her fifth WTA title of the year, having already won the Australian Open, Miami, Roland Garros and Wimbledon. She’s also a win away from the 69th WTA title of her career, which would break a tie with Evonne Goolagong Cawley and put her at fifth on the Open Era list for WTA titles after Martina Navratilova (167), Chris Evert (154), Steffi Graf (107) and Margaret Court (92).
