Angelique Kerber has won through to her first Australian Open semifinal after overpowering former two-time champion Victoria Azarenka in straight sets at Rod Laver Arena, 6-3 7-5.

The match looked set to go to a third and deciding set when Azarenka shot out to a 5-2 lead with two breaks in the second, but Kerber rediscovered the range that had earlier driven her to a 4-0 lead in the first set.

Azarenka, who looked a shadow of the dominant player that had dropped just 11 games en route to the quarterfinals, dropped five games in succession as Kerber booked a last-four clash against an unseeded opponent – either Johanna Konta or Zhang Shuai.
