Rafael Nadal, nueve veces campeón de Roland Garros, se ha retirado este viernes del torneo a raíz de una lesión en su muñeca izquierda antes de encarar su partido de tercera ronda frente a su compatriota Marcel Granollers.
“Me tengo que retirar porque tengo un problema en la muñeca que vengo arrastrando desde hace varias semanas. Desde que jugué con Joao Sousa en Madrid tengo este dolor, pero en París ha ido a más cada día. Llegó un momento en el que no pude pegar la derecha”, aseguró Nadal durante la conferencia de prensa este viernes.
“Ayer jugué con una inyección, pero en la noche empecé a sentir más y más dolor. Asumí los riesgos que se podían asumir, pero ya no da para más. Muchas veces he ido al límite, pero esta vez no me ven capaz de poder jugar. No me pueden dormir la muñeca cinco días más”.
Nadal concede de esta manera el tercer W/O de su carrera. Ya lo había hecho en los cuartos de final de Estoril 2014 y en las semifinales de Miami 2012. Marcel Granollers se medirá en cuarta ronda con el ganador de Dominic Thiem y Alexander Zverev.
The Spaniard, seeded No.4 at Roland-Garros 2016, announced at a press conference that he had arrived with pain in his wrist that had surfaced two weeks before his arrival in Paris.
Nadal had been due to face fellow Spaniard Marcel Granollers in the third round on Saturday after notching up his 200th Grand Slam match win against Facundo Bagnis.
«This is one of the toughest press conferences of my career,» Nadal continued, admitting he was playing through the pain barrier. «If it wasn’t Roland-Garros, I probably wouldn’t have taken the risks. It’s the most important event of the year for me.
«We took the risks yesterday. To have won the tournament I would have had to play five more matches and the doctor told me that was 100 per cent impossible.
Nadal, wearing a wrist brace, said the injury first flared up during his quarter-final match in Madrid against Joao Sousa earlier this month, after which he underwent treatment in Barcelona before heading to Rome, where he lost in the quarter-finals to Novak Djokovic.
