If you ever wanted evidence of why Serena Williams is one of the greatest performers in any sport in any era, here it was writ brilliantly large on a grey day on Philippe-Chatrier Court when she looked across the net, saw a mirror image of her own fighting sprit in the slight shape of Yulia Putintseva and then soaked up the blows, outfought her inspired opponent and delivered the knock-out blow.

The champion was on the ropes against a young, hungry outsider who was moving better, who was tactically superior and, under pressure, Williams’s game was becoming riddled with errors. But she is not the heavyweight champion of world tennis for nothing.

Serena was a set down and a break down. Then, later, Putintseva was just a point away from serving for the match. Yet when it came to the nitty gritty, when it came to nerve, resolve and sheer bloody-minded determination to prevail, the 34-year-old’s supreme power and skill once again proved irresistible as she carved out a 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 triumph in two hours eight minutes.

Put a seeded player in Kiki Bertens’ way at Roland-Garros 2016, and the world No.58 will show that seed the door. Timea Bacsinszky became the fourth she has despatched this fortnight, as Bertens stretched her winning streak to 12 and became the first Dutchwoman to reach the last four here since 1971.

In miserably cold conditions on Suzanne-Lenglen Court, Bertens battled through an entrenched 70-minute first set where breaks of serve were thick on the ground, and then breezed through the second to prevent Bacsinszky racking up a second successive semi-final appearance in Paris.

Bertens won it 7-5, 6-2, and will face the 21-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams for a place in the final.
