Hull City got their 2016/17 Premier League campaign off to a dream start as they stunned Leicester City, the defending champions, 2-1 at the KCOM Stadium.

The Tigers had gone into the match hit by injuries and the summer departure of Steve Bruce, the manager, but they shook off those issues to hand a defending champions a defeat in their opening match of the next season for the first time in the Premier League.

An acrobatic bicycle kick by Adama Diomande gave the hosts the lead in added time of the first half and Robert Snodgrass scored their second after Riyad Mahrez had levelled from the penalty spot shortly after break.

Mahrez equalised two minutes into the second period after Demarai Gray had been felled by Tom Huddlestone but Hull restored their advantage on 57 minutes when Snodgrass drilled low into the net after Leicester had failed to clear Ahmed Elmohamady’s centre.

Leicester pushed in search of an equaliser but the closest they came was when Danny Drinkwater’s shot was easily saved by the Hull goalkeeper, Eldin Jakupovic. It was their first defeat since February after a season in which they had lost just three times.
