CARSON, Calif. — The LA Galaxy won a record fifth MLS Cup on Sunday, as they defeated the New England Revolution 2-1 in the 2014 MLS Cup Final at StubHub Center following added extra time.
Homegrown striker Gyasi Zardes scored in the 52nd minute to give the Galaxy the lead. Stefan Ishizaki hit a deflected cross into the box, and Zardes beat out Andrew Farrell with a slick move to get a clear shot off.
The Revs leveled the score in the 79th minute, when substitute Patrick Mullins received a pass from Jose Goncalves, then sent the pass along to Chris Tierney, who hit just enough on the shot to get it inside the far post.
The game then went to extra time, and in the second half of extra time, Robbie Keane put the hosts ahead once again with the clutch shot from close quarters.
The game marked the third time the Galaxy have beaten the New England Revolution in an MLS Cup final (2002, 2005) and also marked the fifth time the Revs have lost in the MLS Cup final.
