Temperatures have reached more than 45.0\u00b0C on consecutive days, with extremely warm nights in between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ane4bf-datap1.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wmocms\/s3fs-public\/ckeditor\/files\/news_3_1.png?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"twitt\" title=\"Twitt\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This unprecedent event is having multiple major impacts: &nbsp;heat stress in people, animals and vegetation; air quality (pollutants due to hot stable air); forest fire risk; possibility of landslides caused by glacier melting in mountains; damages and malfunctioning of infrastructure and transport systems not prepared for such high temperatures; and many other social and economic risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>National and local meteorological services have issued many heat warnings and advisories and it is to be hoped that heat-health early warning services will limit the death toll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So many records have been broken that it is difficult to keep track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The all-time Canadian record was broken on Sunday, with Lytton in British Columbia recording 46.6\u00b0C (1.6\u00b0C higher than the previous record set on 5 July 1937). Less than 24 hours later, Lytton broke this record again, reaching 47.9\u00b0C on Monday. It then broke it for a third time on 29 June with a temperature of 49.6\u00b0C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The temperature record surpassed Las Vegas&#8217; all-time record high of 117\u00b0F\/47.2\u00b0C. He said: We are not done with this yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe North West Territories have recorded their all-time highest temperatures not just in June, but any point in the year.&nbsp; We are setting records that have no business in being set so early in the season.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have had many days of this in a row and each morning we wake up to a higher temperatures. This is what is dangerous and it is affecting people throughout many days where they are dehydrated and we have had many days where the temperature is higher than the day before,\u201d Mr Castellan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOvernight lows being higher than our average daytime highs for late June is a really big deal. Our bodies need to cool off and recover before taking on another day of high temperatures. Another thing to think about is the infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFewer than 40 per cent of homes have air conditioning on the coast, people are having to go to libraries and shopping malls to find a couple of hours of air conditioning. I have been sleeping in a tent to get some respite from the heat,\u201d said Mr Castellan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/weather.gc.ca\/warnings\/weathersummaries_e.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ECCA has issued numerous heat warnings and advisories.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>United States of America<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From California and Nevada into the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Northwest?src=hashtag_click\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Northwest<\/a>&nbsp;and east into Montana, over 14 million Americans remain under either excessive&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/heat?src=hashtag_click\">heat<\/a>&nbsp;warnings, watches or heat advisories in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/West?src=hashtag_click\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">West<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJust a historic stretch of record shattering temperatures in the Northwest!&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/HeatWave2021?src=hashtag_click\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">#HeatWave2021<\/a>,\u201d said the U.S. National Weather Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seattle set a new all-time record at 104\u00b0F (40\u00b0C) on Sunday and broke that on Monday with 107\u00b0F (41.7\u00b0C) Portland broke the record twice &#8211; 108\u00b0F (42\u00b0C) on Saturday 112\u00b0F (44.4\u00b0C) on Sunday, according to the US National Weather Service. Many other station records tumbled on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The heat is being caused by a combination of a significant atmospheric blocking pattern which has led to a heat dome, with low pressure either side, and which is not being moved along by the jet stream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This heat wave comes on the heels of another historic heat wave less than two weeks ago that baked the U.S. Desert Southwest and California with hundreds of record highs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Northern hemisphere heat&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"map\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ane4bf-datap1.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wmocms\/s3fs-public\/ckeditor\/files\/news.png?resize=640%2C445&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"445\">Other parts of the northern hemisphere are already experiencing exceptional early hot summer conditions extending from the north Africa, Arabian Peninsula, eastern Europe, Iran and the north-western indian continent. Maximum daily temperatures exceeded 45\u00b0C in several locations and reaching 50\u2019s in the Sahara.&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/ane4bf-datap1.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wmocms\/s3fs-public\/ckeditor\/files\/The_western_regions_of_Libya_have_been_affected_by_a_desert_depression_causing_severe_heat_wave_since_21_June_2021.pdf?dkxxMdIEwwCB4Xt7_rugtkuRTYbJ4qGZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Western Libya saw temperatures more than 10\u00b0C above average for June<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Western Russia and areas around the Caspian Sea have also seen unusually high temperatures due to the continued presence of a large area of high pressure. In parts of the region including Moscow temperatures are expected to reach the mid-30s\u00b0C by day, remaining above 20\u00b0C by night. Areas nearer the Caspian Sea are expected to experience temperatures reaching the mid 40s\u00b0C and remaining above 25\u00b0C at night. It is likely that some all-time temperature records will be set during this heatwave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Climate Change<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These early summer hot weather conditions are taking place in human-induced climate change background, with global temperatures are already 1.2\u00b0C higher than the pre-industrial levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHeatwaves are becoming more frequent and intense as greenhouse gas concentrations lead to a rise in global temperatures.&nbsp;We are also noticing that they are starting earlier and ending later and are taking an increasing toll on human health,\u201d said Omar Baddour, Head of WMO\u2019s Climate Monitoring and Policy Division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nikos Christidis is a climate scientist with the UK\u2019s Met Office. He said: \u201cWithout human-induced climate change, it would have been almost impossible to hit such record-breaking mean June temperatures in the Western United States as the chances of natural occurrence is once every tens of thousands of&nbsp;years. In the present-day climate getting an extremely hot June is common and is likely to occur twice in three decades. However, an analysis from many computer models suggests that by the end of the century these extreme temperatures are more likely than not. Human influence is estimated to have increased the likelihood of a new record several thousand times,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5\u00b0C contained information on climate change and human welfare.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Climate-related risks to health, livelihoods, food security, water supply, human security, and economic growth are projected to increase with global warming of 1.5 \u00b0C and increase further with 2 \u00b0C. Limiting warming to 1.5 \u00b0C rather than 2 \u00b0C could result in 420 million fewer people being exposed to severe heatwaves, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, vulnerable people over the age of 65 experienced a record 220 million more heatwave exposures, than the average for the baseline of 1986\u20132005, according to&nbsp;WMO\u2019s report on the State of the Global Climate in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The WMO and World Health Organization Joint Office on Climate and Health works actively to protect people\u2019s health from this major hazard.
