This has brought unprecedented heat, droughts, cold and wet conditions in various places. The connection of this large-scale disturbance of summer season with the warming of Arctic and the heat accumulation in the ocean needs to be investigated,\u00bb said Dr Omar Baddour, head of WMO Climate Monitoring and Policy Division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>European Floods<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some parts of Western Europe received up to 2 months worth of rainfall in 2 days (14 and 15 July) on soils that were already near saturation. The top 1 meter of soil was completely saturated or well above field capacity after the intense rain in the most affected regions of Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg and Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of the human toll, Germany and Belgium were the worst hit countries by the floods in Europe. Authorities reported at least one hundred people were killed, with many more missing as people were trapped or swept away by waters. Images of collapsed houses and landlides showed the force of the waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ane4bf-datap1.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wmocms\/s3fs-public\/ckeditor\/files\/Screenshot_2021-07-16_103347.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"24-Hour accumulated precipitation values\" title=\"24-Hour accumulated precipitation values\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00abIt is a catastrophe. This unstable, baroclinic system usually moves slowly over a confined region, and it is associated with strong convergence and upward motion leading to heavy rainfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Switzerland and parts of north-eastern France were also been badly impacted.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Switzerland, MeteoSwiss described high water levels as critical. The top Level 5 flood warning is in place for lakes Biel, Thun and the Vierwaldstattersee, and level 4 for Lake Brienz, the Rhine near Basel and Lake Zurich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ane4bf-datap1.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wmocms\/s3fs-public\/ckeditor\/files\/Screenshot_2021-07-16_103436.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Average air temperature anomaly\" title=\"Average air temperature anomaly\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Flash flooding paralysed London\u2019s transport network on 12 July as around 70 mm of rainfall fell in a short space of time over a highly populated urban area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Heatwaves<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Central Europe suffered deadly floods, Northern Europe has been gripped by an extended heatwave<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.ilmatieteenlaitos.fi\/press-release\/5vByjewgsYT1lbvgSv2FQ6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Finland had its warmest June on record<\/a>, according to FMI. And the heat has extended into July. Kouvola Anjala, which is in southern Finland, has seen 27 consecutive days with temperatures above 25\u00b0C. This is the longest heatwave in Finland since at least 1961.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Lappeenranta Hiekkapakka and Porvoo Kalb\u00e5dagrund temperature did not drop below 24.2\u00b0C (12 h minimum). WMO is ready to verify new extreme temperatures We are currently evaluating 130\u00b0F reading in Aug 2020 at Death Valley, which holds world highest temperature record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US National Weather Service on 16 July issued new warnings of excessive heat in Northwest Pacific which was hit by the end of June heatwave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The megadrought conditions, very dry fuels and heatwaves are fuelling the occurrence of extreme wildfires this year in west USA, as well as western and central Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Hazard mapping system fire and smoke product for North America, 15th July 2021 (OSPO\/NOAA)\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ane4bf-datap1.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wmocms\/s3fs-public\/ckeditor\/files\/Screenshot_2021-07-16_141332.jpg?resize=576%2C421&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"576\" height=\"421\"><strong>Climate Change attribution<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Climate change is already increasing the frequency of extreme weather events, and many single events have been shown to have been made worse by global warming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The record-breaking heatwave in parts of the US and Canada at the end of June would have been virtually impossible without the influence of human-caused climate change, according to a rapid attribution analysis by an international team of leading climate scientists. Climate change, caused by greenhouse gas emissions, made the heatwave at least 150 times more likely to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the atmosphere gets warmer it holds more moisture which means it will rain more during storms, increasing the risk of floods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coinciding with the heavy rainfall in London, the UK\u2019s Met Office issued a new study which examines how high-impact weather in the UK, such as extremely hot days, heavy rainfall and very cold conditions, could be affected at different levels of global warming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ane4bf-datap1.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wmocms\/s3fs-public\/ckeditor\/files\/Screenshot_2021-07-16_103550.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Fire Weather Index ranking and last 1 day active fires, 15th July 2021 (GWIS)\" title=\"Fire Weather Index ranking and last 1 day active fires, 15th July 2021 (GWIS)\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The study,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10584-021-03100-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published in the journal Climatic Change<\/a>, found that the higher the level of global warming, the projected increase in frequency&nbsp;or&nbsp;severity&nbsp;or both&nbsp;will be&nbsp;stronger&nbsp;for hot weather, droughts and flooding in the UK.&nbsp;These high-impact weather events can cause significant disruption across the UK affecting sectors such as health, transport, agriculture and energy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of days of&nbsp;high-impact&nbsp;heavy rainfall&nbsp;in the UK leading to severe weather warnings&nbsp;could&nbsp;rise&nbsp;by three days per year&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, there are around 7 days per year (range 6-9 days) in England and Wales with intense and prolonged rainfall&nbsp;that could lead to river flooding.&nbsp;With a 4.0\u00b0C rise in global temperature this could rise to 11 days per year (range 10-13 days).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ane4bf-datap1.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wmocms\/s3fs-public\/ckeditor\/files\/bn_17.png?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"wmo twitt\" title=\"wmo twitt\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Under a 2.0\u00b0C rise in global temperature it is expected England and Wales will receive 9 days (range 8-10 days) of&nbsp;intense and prolonged rainfall.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IPCC Special Report Global Warming of 1.5\u00b0C mentions that human-induced global warming has already caused multiple observed changes in the climate system. Trends in intensity and frequency of some climate and weather extremes have been detected over time spans during which about 0.5\u00b0C of global warming occurred. Changes include increases in both land and ocean temperatures, as well as more frequent heatwaves in most land regions.
