In Portugal and&nbsp;Spain&nbsp; temperatures have reached highs up to around 46 degrees Celsius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exceptional heat is expected to affect a large part of England early this week, with temperatures likely in the high 30s C in some places and perhaps even reaching 40\u00b0C. The Red Extreme heat national severe weather warning will cover Monday and Tuesday (18<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;and 19<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;July) for parts of central, northern, eastern and southeastern England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Met Office Chief Meteorologist Paul Gundersen, said \u201cExceptional, perhaps record-breaking temperatures are likely early next week, quite widely across the red warning area on Monday, and focused a little more east and north on Tuesday. Currently there is a 50% chance we could see temperatures top 40\u00b0C and 80% we will see a new maximum temperature reached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNights are also likely to be exceptionally warm, especially in urban areas. This is likely to lead to widespread impacts on people and infrastructure. Therefore, it is important people plan for the heat and consider changing their routines. This level of heat can have adverse health effects.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The step up in warning level to red is running parallel to an increase in the current&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/public\/weather\/heat-health\/?tab=heatHealth&amp;season=normal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Heat Health Warning<\/a>&nbsp;to Level 4 for England by the UK Health Security Agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Will we get record-breaking heat?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the first time we have forecast 40\u00b0C&nbsp; in the UK. The current record high temperature in the UK is 38.7\u00b0C, which was reached at Cambridge Botanic Garden on 25 July in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weather forecast models are run numerous times to help us quantify the likelihood of a particular event occurring and estimate the uncertainty which is always present in weather forecasting to some degree. Some models are now producing a 50% chance of maximum temperatures in excess of 40\u00b0C in isolated parts of the UK for the start of next week. Mid, to high, 30s Celsius will be seen more widely with an 80% chance we will exceed the current record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is this due to climate change?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe hoped we wouldn\u2019t get to this situation but for the first time ever we are forecasting greater than 40\u00b0C in the UK, climate attribution scientist at the Met Office, Dr Nikos Christidis, said. In a recent study we found that the likelihood of extremely hot days in the UK has been increasing and will continue to do so during the course of the century\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cClimate change has already influenced the likelihood of temperature extremes in the UK. The chances of seeing 40\u00b0C days in the UK could be as much as 10 times more likely in the current climate than under a natural climate unaffected by human influence. The likelihood of exceeding 40\u00b0C anywhere in the UK in a given year has also been rapidly increasing, and, even with current pledges on emissions reductions, such extremes could be taking place every 15 years in the climate of 2100.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Extreme heat events do occur within natural climate variation due to changes in global weather patterns. However, the increase in the frequency, duration, and intensity of these events over recent decades is clearly linked to the observed warming of the planet and can be attributed to human activity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The chances of seeing 40\u00b0C days in the UK could be as much as 10 times more likely in the current climate than under a natural climate unaffected by human influence. The likelihood of exceeding 40\u00b0C anywhere in the UK in a given year has also been rapidly increasing&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst a 1\u00b0C background temperature increase may not seem significant, the resulting increase in the severity of extreme heat events is already evident in the observed record. This has widespread and significant impacts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ane4bf-datap1.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wmocms\/s3fs-public\/ckeditor\/files\/news_18-07.png?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Fire Danger Forecast (ECMWF) for 18-19 July\" title=\"Fire Danger Forecast (ECMWF) for 18-19 July\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Heatwave hitting all Western Europe<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Extreme heat has already spread over Portugal, Spain and France. In Portugal, temperatures have reached highs up to around 46 degrees Celsius. Red warnings are in effect for much of Portugal as hot conditions increase the risk of wildfires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wildfires have torn through France in recent weeks, as well as other European countries including Portugal and Spain, and more than 13,000 hectares of land were on fire in the Gironde region in the past five days, up from 7,300 hectares on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the latest weather warning from Meteofrance, 15 of France\u2019s 96 departments were listed on \u00abred\u201d alert and 51on \u00aborange\u00bb alert, with residents of those areas urged to be vigilant. The heatwave in western France is expected to peak on Monday, with temperatures climbing above 40 degrees Celsius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In neighboring Spain, firefighters were battling a series of blazes on Saturday after days of unusually high temperatures that reached up to 45.7 C (114 F).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent modelling study, published in the journal Nature Geoscience, concluded that the expansion of a high-pressure system over the Atlantic \u2014 the Azores High \u2014 is leading to the driest conditions on the Iberian Peninsula in the last thousand years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The area of high pressure currently over the UK will progressively move east across north-central Europe&nbsp; and&nbsp; reach the Northern Balkans by the middle of next week. This will result in high temperatures for much of western and central Europe<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Degradation of air quality<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is worth pointing that high temperatures is not the only adverse consequence of heat waves, says Lorenzo Labrador, Scientific Officer at WMO\u2019s Global Atmosphere Watch Programme. \u201cThe stable and stagnant atmosphere acts as a lid to trap atmospheric pollutants, including particulate matter, increasing their concentrations closer to the surface. This results in a degradation of air quality and adverse health effects, particularly to vulnerable people. Likewise, the abundant sunshine, high concentrations of certain atmospheric pollutants and stable atmosphere is conducive to episodes of ozone formation near the surface, which has detrimental effects on people and plants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Understanding the causes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00abEvery heatwave occurring&nbsp;in Europe today is made more likely and more intense by human-induced climate change,\u00bb&nbsp;said a study published by scientists at World Weather Attribution&nbsp;on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldweatherattribution.org\/human-contribution-to-record-breaking-june-2019-heatwave-in-france\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Human contribution to record-breaking June 2019 heatwave in France.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to IPCC the frequency of certain types of weather and climate extremes is increasing due to climate change and several attribution studies have shown that it has made many single recent events more intense.
