Del 6 al 9 de febrero de 2023 tendr\u00e1 lugar en Kingston (Jamaica) una conferencia regional de la OMM titulada \u201cAumento de la resiliencia meteorol\u00f3gica, h\u00eddrica y clim\u00e1tica en Am\u00e9rica del Norte, Am\u00e9rica Central y el Caribe\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La Conferencia ser\u00e1 inaugurada por el Honorable Matthew Samuda, miembro del Gabinete del Ministerio de Crecimiento Econ\u00f3mico y Creaci\u00f3n de Empleo de Jamaica, el Sr. Evan Thompson, Director del Servicio Meteorol\u00f3gico de Jamaica y el Dr. Wenjian Zhang, Subsecretario General de la OMM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Re\u00fane a directores de Servicios Meteorol\u00f3gicos e Hidrol\u00f3gicos Nacionales y expertos t\u00e9cnicos de 23 pa\u00edses de Am\u00e9rica del Norte, Am\u00e9rica Central y el Caribe, instituciones asociadas y financieras y representantes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

de los sectores privados.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La reuni\u00f3n discutir\u00e1 y coordinar\u00e1 los aspectos operativos y estrat\u00e9gicos relacionados con las redes de observaci\u00f3n meteorol\u00f3gica e hidrol\u00f3gica, el intercambio de datos, la provisi\u00f3n de servicios y las formas de garantizar la sostenibilidad de estas infraestructuras y operaciones relacionadas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Durante el segundo d\u00eda, se organizar\u00e1 una sesi\u00f3n especial sobre servicios meteorol\u00f3gicos, clim\u00e1ticos e hidrol\u00f3gicos y esta ser\u00e1 la ocasi\u00f3n para presentar la \u201cIniciativa de Alertas Tempranas para Todos\u201d, con intervenciones del Secretario General de la OMM, Prof. Petteri Taalas, y Mami Mizutori, el Representante Especial del Secretario General para la Reducci\u00f3n del Riesgo de Desastres, as\u00ed como expertos regionales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La Conferencia Regional tambi\u00e9n revisar\u00e1 los mecanismos financieros y de cooperaci\u00f3n en curso para apoyar a los Servicios Meteorol\u00f3gicos e Hidrol\u00f3gicos Nacionales, como el Servicio de Financiamiento de Observaciones Sistem\u00e1ticas (SOFF), el proyecto Caribe\u00f1o de Sistemas de Alerta Temprana de Riesgos Clim\u00e1ticos (CREWS) y otras oportunidades relevantes y de fusi\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La Conferencia y los resultados esperados son cr\u00edticos para la regi\u00f3n considerando los desaf\u00edos sociales y econ\u00f3micos generales, el proceso de recuperaci\u00f3n despu\u00e9s de las pandemias y el contexto mundial. Una coordinaci\u00f3n mejorada y la cooperaci\u00f3n intrarregional ser\u00e1n mecanismos clave para mejorar los servicios esenciales de alerta temprana y contribuir con los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible con \u00e9nfasis en la reducci\u00f3n de los efectos adversos del clima y el agua y aumentar la resiliencia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El Gobierno de Jamaica ha desempe\u00f1ado un papel de liderazgo en la regi\u00f3n, con mensajes expl\u00edcitos y llamados a la acci\u00f3n durante la COP 27 por parte del Ministro Samuda y por la contribuci\u00f3n relevante del Servicio Meteorol\u00f3gico de Jamaica en las actividades regionales de la OMM a trav\u00e9s de la Presidencia de la Asociaci\u00f3n Regional IV de la OMM con el Sr. Evan Thompson. Este liderazgo ha permitido consolidar la asistencia mutua y la cooperaci\u00f3n entre los SMHN de la regi\u00f3n y ejecutar un Plan de Implementaci\u00f3n Regional pragm\u00e1tico que trae nuevas oportunidades para las regiones de Centroam\u00e9rica y el Caribe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jamaica hosts WMO regional conference<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

A WMO Regional Conference \u201cIncreasing weather, water and climate resilience in North America, Central America and the Caribbean\u201d takes place in Kingston, Jamaica, from 6 to 9 February 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Conference will be opened by the Honourable Matthew Samuda,<\/a> member of the Cabinet  of  the  Ministry on Economic Growth and Job Creation of Jamaica, Mr. Evan Thompson, Director of the Meteorological Service of Jamaica and Dr. Wenjian Zhang, WMO Assistant Secretary-General<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It gathers Directors of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services and technical  experts from  23 countries across North America, Central America and the Caribbean,  partner and financial institutions and representatives <\/p>\n\n\n\n

of the private sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting will discuss and coordinate operational and strategic aspects related with the meteorological and hydrological observing networks, data exchange, provision on services  and ways to ensure the  sustainability of these infrastructures and related operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the second day<\/a>, a special session on weather, climate and water services will be organized and this will be the occasion to present the \u201cEarly Warnings for All Initiative, with interventions from WMO Secretary-General Prof. Petteri Taalas, and Mami Mizutori, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, as well as regional experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Regional Conference will also review the ongoing cooperation and financial mechanisms to support the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services such as the Systematic Observations Financing Facility (SOFF), The Climate Risk Early Warning Systems (CREWS) Caribbean project and other relevant and merging opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Conference and expected outputs are critical for the region considering the overall social and economic challenges, the recovery process after pandemics and the global context. An enhanced coordination and intra-regional cooperation will be key mechanisms to enhance essential early warning services and contribute with the Sustainable Development Goals with emphasis in the reduction of adverse climate-weather and water adverse impacts and  increase resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Jamaican Government has played a leadership role in the region, with explicit messages and call for action during COP 27 by Minister Samuda and by the relevant contribution of Jamaican Meteorological Service in WMO Regional activities through the Presidency of the WMO Regional Association IV with Mr. Evan Thompson. This leadership has made possible to consolidate the mutual assistance and cooperation between the NMHS from the region and executing a pragmatic Regional Implementation Plan bringing new opportunities for Central America and the Caribbean regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
