MADRID, España – Estando tan poderosa e inspiradora como siempre, Petra Kvitova produjo la mayor sorpresa del año el viernes, superando a Serena Williams en un monumental partido de semifinales en el Mutua Madrid Open.
No sólo había derrotado Williams a Kvitova en sus cinco duelos previos, pero la estadounidense entró en el partido con una serie de rachas ganadoras impresionantes- había ganado 19 partidos consecutivos en Madrid, 27 partidos seguidos en el circuito, y, quizás lo más impresionante de todo, 50 partidos seguidos en torneos Premier Obligatorios, una racha que remonta al Miami Open 2012.
Hubo algunos momentos de tensión cerca del final cuando Williams comenzó a acercarse, del 6-2, 5-1 al 6-2, 5-3, y luego subiendo 30-0 en su saque en el siguiente juego, pero ya era demasiado poco y demasiado tarde, y la cabeza de serie Nº 4 Kvitova acabó con la cabeza de serie Nº 1 Williams después de una hora y 13 minutos, 6-2, 6-3.

Not only had Williams beaten Kvitova in all five of their previous career meetings, but the American went into the match with a number of gargantuan winning streaks – she’d won 19 straight matches in Madrid, 27 straight matches on the tour and, perhaps most impressive of all, 50 straight matches at Premier Mandatory-level events, a streak that dated all the way back to the Miami Open in 2012.
There were a few tense moments near the end as Williams started closing in, tightening the score from 6-2, 5-1 to 6-2, 5-3, then going up 30-0 on her serve in the next game, but it was too little too late, and the No.4-seeded Kvitova closed out No.1-seeded Williams after an hour and 13 minutes, 6-2, 6-3
