NEW YORK, NY, USA – The first match on Arthur Ashe at this year’s US Open brought with it the first upset as Dominika Cibulkova knocked out No.7 seed Ana Ivanovic in three topsy-turvy sets.
Cibulkova has struggled since returning from Achilles surgery at the start of the summer, but looked back to her ebullient best against Ivanovic, fending off a mid-match slump to triumph, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
In a contest between two of the WTA’s most aggressive ball-strikers, Cibulkova looked on course for a comfortable passage into the second round when she took the first set and then opened up a 3-1 lead in the second. Ivanovic, though, had no intention of going quietly, reeling off the next five games to turn the match on its head.
