WUHAN, China – Venus Williams outslugged former Top 15 player Julia Goerges on Tuesday to not only reach the third round of the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open, but also score her 700th match win.
Goerges was battle-hardened, having come through the qualies this week, but Williams was just too strong on the day, her serve especially – she held nine of her 10 service games during the match.
At the end of the day, Williams won 10 of the last 11 points to close the victory out, 6-4, 6-3.
And by virtue of that victory Williams now has 700 match wins in her illustrious career, just the second active player to reach that milestone after, of course, Serena Williams, who achieved the feat earlier this year en route to the Miami Open crown (read more and watch highlights from that match here).
