SINGAPORE – Maria Sharapova battled past Flavia Pennetta in a tight two-setter to not only secure her spot in the semifinals of the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global, but to bring Agnieszka Radwanska – who battled past Simona Halep earlier in the day – with her.
Pennetta, who had beaten Sharapova the last three times they’d played, looked very strong early on, breaking in the first game of the match and hanging onto that break for a 4-2 lead. But Sharapova took it to a whole new level from there, painting the lines with her huge groundstrokes and mixing in some pinpoint drop shots to win five of the next six games and sneak out the 54-minute first set, 7-5.
The No.3-seeded Russian only got better in the second set, completely running away with it in 34 minutes to end the No.7-seeded Italian’s WTA Finals hopes – and her illustrious career – 7-5, 6-1.
In the semis, which take place Saturday, Sharapova, who finished No.1 in the Red Group, will play No.2 from the White Group, while Radwanska, the Red Group No.2, will play the White Group No.1.
SINGAPUR – Maria Sharapova superó a Flavia Pennetta en dos ajustados sets, no sólo para asegurar su lugar en las semifinales de las Finales WTA BNP Paribas Singapur presentadas por SC Global, sino para llevarse consigo a Agnieszka Radwanska, quien derrotó a Simona Halep al inicio de la jornada.
Pennetta, quien había derrotado a Sharapova las últimas tres veces que habían jugado, se veía muy fuerte desde el principio, rompiendo en el primer juego del partido y aguantando con ese break para una ventaja de 4-2. Pero Sharapova lo llevó a un nivel completamente nuevo a partir de ahí, golpeando las líneas con sus enormes golpes de fondo y mezclando algunas dejadas milimétricas para ganar cinco de los siguientes seis juegos y ganar el primer set en 54 minutos, 7-5.
La cabeza de serie Nº 3 rusa sólo mejoró en el segundo set, escapándose en 34 minutos para poner fin a las Finales WTA de la cabeza de serie Nº 7 italiana – y su ilustre carrera – 7-5, 6-1.
En las semifinales, que tendrán lugar el sábado, Sharapova, que terminó Nº 1 en el Grupo Rojo, jugará contra la Nº 2 del Grupo Blanco, mientras que Radwanska, Nº 2 del Grupo Rojo, jugará contra la Nº 1 del Grupo Blanco.
