SINGAPORE – WTA Rising Star Garbiñe Muguruza booked her place in the semifinals of the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global with a thrilling three set win over Petra Kvitova on Friday.
In a contest lasting over two and a half hours, it was Muguruza that held her nerve at the death, prevailing, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
Kvitova’s hopes of joining Muguruza in the knockout stage now rest on Safarova defeating Kerber in straight sets in the White Group’s final match.
Lucie Safarova waved farewell to the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global in style with an impressive victory over Angelique Kerber in Friday’s evening session.
While Garbiñe Muguruza’s three set win over Petra Kvitova earlier on had ended her hopes of reaching the semifinals, Safarova produced her best tennis of the week to triumph, 6-4, 6-3, and dash Kerber’s own qualification hopes.
Instead, 2011 champion Kvitova advances to the last four where she will face Maria Sharapova.
