PRAGUE, Czech Republic – Playing in her first Fed Cup final, and facing one of the fastest-rising WTA Rising Stars for the first time, Maria Sharapova got the win to tie it up with the Czech Republic.
Sharapova was playing catch-up, though – the Czechs won the first match of the tie earlier on in the day as Petra Kvitova recovered from a first set blowout to drop two of her own blowout sets and defeat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1, much to the delight of her home crowd at the O2 Arena.
And then, the big challenge for Sharapova – not just her first ever match in a Fed Cup final, but a first-time meeting with Karolina Pliskova, a WTA Rising Star who had reached six WTA finals this year and made it all the way up to No.7 in the world at one point, currently the No.11 player in the world.
But the Russian stepped up in a big way, ripping 28 winners – including a whopping 15 off the forehand side – and breaking the big-serving Czech four times to win in an hour and 29 minutes, 6-3, 6-4.
