According to a story in the Sydney Morning Herald, officials from the Australian Olympic Committee paid a visit to inspect Olympic Village over the weekend and confirmed that, as of Sunday, the location isn’t ready for their athletes.

It is the AOC’s understanding that the safety issues are to do with amenity. A spokesman said there were issues with leaking pipes, spot flooding, blocked toilets and unlit stairwells, for instance. The Rio organising [sic] committee has sent in large teams of cleaners and repair staff, but could not say when the village would be open.

Australian Team Chef de Mission Kitty Chiller went into further detail about the problems on the country’s official website:

Last night (Saturday), we decided to do a “stress test” where taps and toilets were simultaneously turned on in apartments on several floors to see if the system could cope once the athletes are in-house.

The system failed. Water came down walls, there was a strong smell of gas in some apartments and there was “shorting” in the electrical wiring.

We were due to move into the Village on 21 July but we have been living in nearby hotels, because the Village is simply not safe or ready.

The AOC added that “you wouldn’t put people in there yet,” but said there’s still time for the site to progress before its athletes arrive. Nevertheless, this isn’t the start the IOC would’ve been hoping for.
