World No. 1 Serena Williams is one step closer to history. On Day 10 at the US Open, the 34-year-old American continued her pursuit of a record 23rd major title with a hard-fought, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 quarterfinal win over No. 5 seed Simona Halep in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Halep, one of only three players with three singles titles to their credit in 2016 (Madrid, Bucharest, Montreal), was hoping to return to the semifinals for the second straight year. She finished with 20 winners to 17 unforced errors.
Williams improved to a lopsided 8-1 against the Romanian, her lone blemish a 6-0, 6-2 loss to at the WTA Finals in 2014. She has now reached the semifinals or better at each of her last nine Grand Slam outings dating back to the 2014 US Open.
