TORONTO — For the sixth time in franchise history and the first time since 1997, the Indians are American League champions after a 3-0 win over the Blue Jays in Wednesday’s Game 5 of the AL Championship Series at Rogers Centre.
Rookie lefty Ryan Merritt gave Cleveland 4 1/3 shutout innings in his first postseason start, and the bullpen held it down from there, helping homers by Carlos Santana and Coco Crisp and a run-allowing misplay by the Blue Jays to stand as the difference. Toronto starter Marco Estrada took the loss after six innings pitched as his club’s season ended with an ALCS defeat for the second consecutive season.
Game 1 of the 2016 World Series is scheduled for Tuesday night at Progressive Field in Cleveland, with the Indians facing the National League champions — either the Cubs or the Dodgers — live on FOX. Cleveland will be seeking its first World Series title since 1948.
