First-half goals by Sadio Mane and Philippe Coutinho were enough to earn Liverpool victory over West Bromwich Albion at Anfield.
It was a dominant performance by Jurgen Klopp’s men who might have won by heavier margin had Ben Foster not been at his best, but they were given food for thought by Gareth McAuley’s late header.
Liverpool took the lead 20 minutes in with a wonderful sweeping move instigated by a clever dummy from Coutinho and finished by Sadio Mane from Roberto Firmino’s whose cross.
Coutinho doubled his side’s lead 10 minutes before the interval when he received Mane’s pass, sold another dummy and beat Foster with a low shot at his near post.
Adam Lallana fired over and Firmino was denied by McAuley before Foster turned a Dejan Lovren header over.
West Brom struck on 81 minutes when McAuley pounced on a loose ball from a corner and scored. That goal denied Liverpool going above Arsenal and top on goals scored.
