Stoppage-time goals at the end of each half by Aymeric Laporte and Gabriel Jesus gave Manchester City a 2-0 win against Everton at Goodison Park that sent them top of the Premier League.
City’s top-scorer Sergio Aguero hit the crossbar early on, and Laporte sent a header just wide, as the visitors probed the hosts’ defence.
The French defender climbed highest on the stroke of half-time to meet David Silva’s free-kick and send a thumping header into the top corner.
Aguero, Silva and substitute Raheem Sterling all threatened after the break but the match was settled in the dying moments.
Substitute Gabriel Jesus scored at the second attempt after being put through by Kevin De Bruyne, his first effort having cannoned skyward off Pickford.
City top the Premier League for the first time since 15 December thanks to a superior goal difference of +48 to Liverpool’s +41.
Everton stay ninth on 33 points.
