Egan Bernal (Team Ineos) secured overall victory at the Tour de Suisse while Hugh Carthy (EF Education First) claimed a remarkable solo victory on the final stage of the race, which took in the Nufenenpass, San Gottardo and Furkapass.
Rohan Dennis (Bahrain-Merida) made a game attempt to distance Bernal atop the day’s last climb, the Furkaspass, but he had to settle for second place overall after the Colombian was able to match his acceleration. The duo descended the Furkapass together and reached the finish in Ulrichen in second and third place, 1:03 down on the day’s winner.
Carthy was among the attackers on the first of the day’s three climbs, the Nufenenpass, and he soon found himself alone at the head of the race. Although there were still over 90km to go, Carthy was undaunted by the scale of the task that faced him.
The Briton led alone over the Nufenenpass and San Gottardo, building a maximum lead of 4 minutes at the summit. He was 3 minutes clear of the yellow jersey group at the base of the Furkapass and he still had 2:45 of that buffer at the top. Carthy took few risks on the descent to the finish and he had more than enough of a margin to take the stage win and add the king of the mountains title to boot.
In the final standings, Bernal beat Dennis by 19 seconds, while Patrick Konrad (Bora-Hansgrohe) took third overall, 3:04 down on the Colombian. Konrad finished the final stage 2:15 down, in a group that contained Tiesj Benoot (Lotto Soudal) and Jan Hirt (Astana), who took 4th and 5th overall, respectively.
