PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland — Shane Lowry carried the hopes of an entire island into the final round of the British Open and delivered.
Now he has his sights set on making the 2020 European Ryder Cup team. Not many would bet against Lowry joining European captain Padraig Harrington on the plane to Whistling Straits, Wisconsin, next year.
The 32-year-old took a four-shot lead into the final round over England’s Tommy Fleetwood at Royal Portrush, and parlayed that into a six-shot victory. He added a closing 1-over-par 72 to previous rounds of 67, 67 and 63 to post a 15-under 269 total.
His check for $1,935,000 takes him to No. 1 on the European Tour’s Race to Dubai.

Lowry joins Fred Daly (1947), Padraig Harrington (2007, 2008), Darren Clarke (2011) and Rory McIlroy (2014) as the only Irishmen to kiss the old claret jug in celebration. The difference? They didn’t have to try to win on home soil with all of Ireland expecting them to win. That dynamic makes Lowry’s win arguably the greatest Irish victory in Open Championship history.
