WHAT HAPPPENED: After back-to-back first-round losses in Flushing Meadows–including last year when she was the No. 1 seed—Simona Halep overcame a tough challenge from lucky loser Nicole Gibbs to advance to the second round at the 2019 US Open, with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 victory Tuesday in Louis Armstrong Stadium.
With fellow Romanian sports hero Nadia Comaneci looking on, the 27-year-old Halep flashed a dominant forehand and kept Gibbs on the run through much of the match, but the 26-year-old American was up to the challenge. Both players covered a lot of ground and made some impressive saves. After splitting the first two sets, however, the No. 4 seed pulled away early in the third set and closed out the match.
