Esteban Chaves (Team BikeExchange) se hizo con una merecida victoria en la cuarta etapa de la Volta a Catalunya el jueves en Porte Aine. El colombiano atacó con poco menos de 7 km en la subida final y a pesar de la frenética persecución de los Granaderos de Ineos y el líder de la carrera Adam Yates, Chaves se mantuvo firme para llevarse la primera victoria europea de la temporada 2021 para él y su equipo.
Michael Woods (Israel Start-Up Nation) terminó segundo en el escenario con Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) en tercer lugar. La victoria marcó la primera victoria de Chaves desde que se adjudicó una etapa en el Giro de Italia 2019.
Adam Yates fue cuarto y terminó con seguridad en el grupo de persecución líder. Apenas tuvo problemas en un día en el que un grupo grande se despejó en la primera subida del día. Los Granaderos de Ineos controlaron la mayor parte de la acción y vieron varios ataques en la última subida con Rohan Dennis, Richard Carapaz y finalmente Richie Porte marcando el ritmo en la última subida.
Solo Chaves pudo crear una brecha sostenible con el escalador del tamaño de una pinta estableciendo una ventaja de 26 segundos sobre el grupo perseguidor. Enric Mas (Movistar) intentó contraatacar, pero fue rápidamente derribado por el siempre duradero Carapaz y, aunque la ventaja de Chaves se redujo a solo 15 segundos dentro de los últimos 1.500 metros, tenía suficiente en el tanque para contener a sus perseguidores.

Esteban Chaves (Team BikeExchange) took a well-deserved win on stage 4 of the Volta a Catalunya on Thursday at Porte Aine.The Colombian attacked with just under 7km to on the final climb and despite a frantic chase from Ineos Grenadiers and race leader Adam Yates Chaves hung on to take his and his team’s first European win of the 2021 season.
Michael Woods (Israel Start-Up Nation) finished second on the stage with Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) in third. The win marked Chaves’ first victory since he claimed a stage in the 2019 Giro d’Italia.
Adam Yates was fourth, and finished safely in the lead chase group. He was barely troubled on a day that saw a large group go clear on the first climb of the day. Ineos Grenadiers controlled most of the action and saw off a number of attacks on the last climb with Rohan Dennis, Richard Carapaz, and finally Richie Porte setting the pace on the last ascent.
Only Chaves was able to create a sustainable gap with the pint-sized climber establishing a 26 second lead over the chase group. Enric Mas (Movistar) attempted to counter attack but was quickly reeled in by the ever-durable Carapaz and even though Chaves’ lead dropped to just 15 seconds inside the final 1,500 meters he had enough in the tank to hold off his pursuers.
