MADRID, Spain – Serena Williams won a tight first set then ran away with it in the second set to beat WTA Rising Star Sloane Stephens on Monday and reach the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open.
She ran away with it from there, taking the second set at love to close it out, 6-4, 6-0.
Williams has now won 25 matches in a row, a stretch that dates back to the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global last October – she lost her second round robin match to Simona Halep then won her next three matches for the title, and has now won her first 22 matches of 2015.
Only four players have won 25 or more matches in a row since the turn of the millennium in 2000, with Williams doing it three times and Venus Williams, Justine Henin and Victoria Azarenka.
