ROME, Italy – No.3 seed Maria Sharapova’s opening assignment at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia came to an earlier than expected conclusion when her opponent, Jarmila Gajdosova, retired midway through the second set.
Sharapova, who was leading 6-2, 3-1 at the time of the retirement, will have been pleased enough with her 53-minute workout, in which she looked in good touch. After an early exit in Stuttgart, the Russian returned to form with a semifinal run in Madrid, and will be targeting at least another few matches in the final tournament before the start of her French Open defense.
