Serena Williams has come through a glorious two-hour battle on Chatrier to defeat Lucie Safarova for the Roland-Garros crown, her 20th Grand Slam title.
Williams raised her arms in a mixture of relief and elation as she sealed the 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-2 victory, forcing a final error of a game Safarova’s racquet.
Having lead 6-3, 4-1, 40-15, Williams was stunned as Safarova made a thrilling comeback; the Czech loosened up and swung for the fences, turning what looked to be a routine Serena victory on its head.
Safarova went up 2-0 in the final set before Williams wrested control of the match, reeling off six games in a row to capture her third French Open title.
