NEW YORK, NY, USA – Serena Williams beat big-hitting Dutch qualifier Kiki Bertens on Arthur Ashe Stadium on Wednesday afternoon to not only reach the third round of the US Open and get one step closer to the Calendar Year Grand Slam, but also to score her milestone 50th match win of the year.

Early on Bertens didn’t seem like the No.110-ranked player in the world – with big serving and an impressive barrage off the ground she broke Williams in the third game and built leads of 3-1, 4-2 and 5-3, and even when the World No.1 caught up and took it to a tie-break, Bertens stormed ahead, 4-0.

But like she’s done so many times in the past Williams fought back, rattling off seven of the next eight points to steal the set, clinching it on a forehand that clipped the tape and dribbled over, and from there the No.1-seeded American only got better, eventually wrapping it up, 7-6(5), 6-3.

Williams is now a more-than-impressive 50-2 on the year, her only losses coming against Petra Kvitova (in the semifinals of Madrid) and WTA Rising Star Belinda Bencic (in the semifinals of Toronto).
