In a 3-hour, 23-minute marathon in 90-degree heat and high humidity, Johanna Konta , a scrappy, 24-year-old qualifier from Great Britain and ranked No. 97 in the world, pulled off a major upset over the No. 9 seed and 2015 Wimbledon finalist, Garbine Muguruza of Spain, 7-6, 6-7, 6-2.

The match registered as the longest record women’s singles match in US Open history, topping the previous record of three hours, 16 minutes, set by Samantha Stosur and Nadia Petrova in 2011.
