HONG KONG, SAR – Venus Williams powered into the quarterfinals of the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open, where she’ll face a player who’s given her sister all kinds of trouble: Alizé Cornet.
But back to Thursday, and Williams, the No.3 seed at the International-level event, won the first seven games of the match and eventually needed just 63 minutes to beat China’s Wang Yafan, 6-0, 6-2.
Next up for Williams will be Cornet, the No.8 seed, who battled almost two and a half hours to get past Yaroslava Shvedova, 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-4.
Cornet, a former World No.11, has had a lot of success against one of the Williams sisters – she’s beaten Serena Williams the last three times they’ve played, all in 2014, including at Wimbledon.
But Venus is a different story – she’s 4-0 against the Frenchwoman, never losing a set.
