HONG KONG, SAR – Venus Williams completely overpowered sister Serena’s nemesis at the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open on Friday, rushing past Alizé Cornet in exactly 60 minutes.
Cornet had beaten Serena Williams in their last three meetings, all in 2014, but the No.8-seeded Frenchwoman was no match for Venus Williams, as the No.3-seeded American blasted huge serves and huge groundstrokes – and followed many of them into the net – to cruise into the semis, 6-1, 6-1.
The former No.1 is now 5-0 in her career against the former No.11, never losing a set, either.
Up next for the former No.1 is another former No.1, Jelena Jankovic. The No.4-seeded Serb also cruised in her quarterfinal, breezing past No.6-seeded WTA Rising Star Daria Gavrilova, 6-1, 6-1.
Williams and Jankovic are tied in their head-to-head, 6-6. They haven’t played in over three years.
The other semifinal match-up will pit No.2 seed Angelique Kerber against No.5 seed Samantha Stosur, after Stosur won 11 games in a row from 6-4, 3-1 down to beat Heather Watson, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, and Kerber battled nearly two hours to edge No.7 seed Caroline Garcia in a tight two-setter, 7-5, 6-3.
Kerber and Stosur will be playing for the sixth time. Stosur leads the head-to-head, 3-2.
Kerber will qualify for the WTA Finals if she goes on to win the title this weekend.
