ZHUHAI, China – Elina Svitolina outlasted Carla Suárez Navarro on Friday to snap up the fourth and final berth in the semifinals of the $2.15-million Huajin Securities WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai.
With both players beating Andrea Petkovic in their first round robin matches of the week, the winner of this one would advance to the semis. And it was the No.8-seeded Svitolina who came out on top, bouncing back after dropping a marathon 80-minute first set – as well as rallying from 2-0 down in the third – to edge the No.8-seeded Suárez Navarro after two hours and 37 minutes, 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-3.
Joining Svitolina in the final four will be No.1 seed Venus Williams, No.3 seed Karolina Pliskova and No.4 seed Roberta Vinci, all of whom secured their semifinals spots in Zhuhai on Thursday.
Saturday’s semifinals will see Williams play against Vinci and Pliskova play against Svitolina.
