No one has won more matches this season than Kiki Bertens, but none of that mattered against a brilliant Simona Halep.
Absorbing the pure, physical power of the No.26 seed from the Netherlands with at times exquisite footwork and shot placement, the Romanian moved into the fourth round with a 6-4, 6-3 win under the roof on Centre Court.
“I’m really excited I will play in the fourth round,” the No.5 seed said after the match.
Halep, a semi-finalist in 2014, said her return game had been key. “I am not a very big server, so I have to exercise a lot of returns,” said Halep, who broke Bertens four times. “I was able to return very well today.”
