Ambitions nursed by the Williams family of a fifth Wimbledon final between Serena and Venus were briskly torpedoed by Angelique Kerber, the No.4 seed from Germany, who out-ran and out-hit the 36-year-old Venus 6-4, 6-4 to reach her second Grand Slam final of 2016.

The fact that she will now face Serena in Saturday’s championship will not faze her unduly, since it was the younger Williams she defeated to win the Australian Open in January to win her first Grand Slam.
“I will just try to go out there with a lot of confidence,” the left-hander promised. A lot of confidence was on show as she dominated the bulk of the exchanges against Venus, who had never previously lost in eight Wimbledon semi-finals, to win in one hour and 12 minutes.
