MELBOURNE, Australia – Top seed Angelique Kerber celebrated her 29th birthday with a thrilling second-round match at the Australian Open, edging past countrywoman Carina Witthoeft, 6-2, 6-7(3), 6-2.

«I just remember celebrating my 18th birthday at home, and having a big party,» she said in her post-match press conference. «Since then, I was always here. It’s nice.

«I mean, I’m feeling here like home, so it’s always great to be in Australia for my birthday.»

Kerber had never lost to Witthoeft in two prior encounters – winning one of their meetings 6-0, 6-0 – but the World No.1 was in for a much tougher day against the 21-year-old, who was looking for her first career Top 10 win on Wednesday.
