Great Britain’s Sir Bradley Wiggins clinched his first road world title with a thrilling time trial victory at the World Championships in Ponferrada.
Wiggins, 34, beat three-time champion Tony Martin by 26.23 seconds on a hilly 47.1km course in north-west Spain.
Martin trailed Wiggins by 9.64 seconds at the final time-check and the Briton extended his lead in the final 12km.
Wiggins, second in 2011 and 2013, now has a rainbow jersey on the road to go with the six he has won on the track.
He clocked 56 minutes 25.52 seconds to claim a convincing win over Germany’s Martin, who was chasing a fourth-successive title. Tom Dumoulin of the Netherlands finished third.
Esta vez sí. El pulso deportivo entre el germano Tony Martin y Bradley Wiggins se saldó con la victoria del británico, que acabó con la hegemonía mundial del alemán desde 2011. Con 26” por delante de Martin y 40” del holandés Tom Dumoulin, Wiggins tiñe de arcoíris una temporada prácticamente en blanco.
Su victoria tiene doble repercusión. No sólo es su primer jersey arcoríris en carretera (los seis que figuran en su palmarés son todos en pista), sino que impide que Tony iguale el récord de cuatro arcoíris de Cancellara, pasando a la historia como el primer corredor en conseguir tantos mundiales consecutivos.
