La conductora de pruebas de Sauber, Tatiana Calderón, dice que tuvo que «estrellarse» para ganarse el respeto de los conductores que no quieren ser «golpeados por una chica».
Las conductora colombiana en la categoría GP3 y ha sido promovida como piloto de desarrollo para la temporada F1 de 2018.
«Todavía existe la creencia de que no se puede ser tan competitivo como los muchachos, por lo que tienes que demostrar tu valía nuevamente», dijo Calderón, de 24 años, al Servicio Mundial de la BBC.
«Una vez que comienzan a verte como otro piloto de carreras no hay problema».
Calderón dijo que estuvo involucrada en choques en carreras porque se rehusó a abandonar la posición de la pista.
«Hubo algunas ocasiones en las que pensé que no iba a levantar porque esta es mi posición y es el momento de frenar», dijo.
«El otro tipo no ha frenado, así que nos estrellamos, pero fue la única forma de hacerle entender que, solo porque soy una mujer, no voy a darle el lugar.
«A veces también es así como tienes que ganarte ese respeto. Nunca más volvió a hacerlo».
Sauber test driver Tatiana Calderon says she has had to «crash» to earn the respect of male drivers who do not want to be «beaten by a girl».
The Colombian races in the GP3 category and has been promoted from development driver for the 2018 F1 season.
«There’s still this belief that you can’t be as competitive as the guys, so you have to prove yourself again,» Calderon, 24, told BBC World Service.
«Once they start to see you as another racing driver there is no issue.»
Calderon said she has been involved in collisions in races because she refused to give up track position.
«There were some occasions where I thought I’m not going to lift because this is my position and it’s their time to brake,» she said.
«The other guy has not braked, so we crashed, but it was the only way to make him understand that, just because I’m a woman, I’m not going to give him the place.
«Sometimes that’s also how you have to earn that respect. He never did it again.»
