The final game of Maria Sharapova’s semifinal match against Ana Ivanovic lasted longer than the three before it.
The tiebreak took 12 points to draw itself to a close, and what a close it was.
Sharapova started the eighth point of the tiebreak with her third consecutive fault.
All that was required was one more of Sharapova’s nine aces and an Ivanovic error to win Sharapova the match, 6-0, 6-4.
She will play third seed Petra Kvitova on Sunday after the Czech player overcame Samantha Stosur 6-3 5-7 6-2.
Kvitova reeled off five games in a row to close out the match in two hours and 21 minutes.
