Simona Halep played one of the matches of her life to beat Serena Williams 6-2, 6-2 to win the Ladies’ Singles Championship on Centre Court in under an hour.
The Romanian fizzed around the court, keeping the ball in play and forcing errors from her more experienced opponent’s racket. In two exhilirating sets, Halep made just three unforced errors. By contrast, Williams made 25.
Given their seedings – Halep is No.7, Williams No.11 – it could hardly be described as a shock result, but few expected the 23-time Grand Slam champion to be harried into so many mistakes in the opening set.
The Romanian made a dream start, breaking the famed Williams serve twice as she raced to a 3-0 lead in the opening seven minutes. While Centre Court paused to catch its collective breath, Halep began the fourth game with her fifth winner to clinch the best rally of the match so far. She ended it with her first ace and a 4-0 lead.
Williams needed a commanding service game. Using all her experience, she slowed everything down – except the serve itself – and held to love: 4-1.
Emboldened, Williams took the fight to Halep with some thunderous groundstrokes into the corners. It went to deuce, but Halep held her nerve – and, eventually, her serve: 5-1. Two games later, and Halep had the first set in the bag in 26 minutes.
At the start of the second set, Williams’ serve helped restore some balance to the contest but Halep was also serving well, running everywhere, and breaking serve for a 3-2 lead.
Once she had held for 4-2, the writing was on the wall for the increasingly emotional seven-time champion, and Halep won the final five games to win the Venus Rosewater Dish.
