The Los Angeles Lakers may no longer feel the immediate shock over the death of Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven other people in a helicopter crash on Jan. 26. But they don’t sense the pain will go away. And in what might become both therapeutic and painful, the Lakers will experience constant reminders of Bryant’s influence.
“Every game is going to be emotional,” said LeBron James, who wore a purple bracelet after practice Monday, along with beads that matched Bryant’s jersey numbers (8, 24). “But time heals all, and it’s going to continue to help us every game.

When the Lakers (37-11) host the San Antonio Spurs (22-26) on Tuesday at Staples Center, they will still see Bryant’s retired jerseys hanging in the rafters as well as his numbers and initials on the court. When the Lakers practice at their facility, they will see a light highlighting Bryant’s jersey numbers on the wall. And when the Lakers play on the road, they will watch yet another Bryant highlight video.
More tributes await at the NBA All-Star game in Chicago on Feb. 16. James said earlier his team will wear Gianna’s No. 2, a decision he made after consulting with his daughter, Zhuri. Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo and his team will wear Bryant’s No. 24. And both teams will wear jersey patches with nine stars, one for each victim.
“It’s both warming and difficult,” Lakers coach Frank Vogel said. “Obviously, we want to continue to honor Kobe and Gigi forever, not just the rest of the season. But there’s also an element of, ‘It’s going to continue to be hard.’ In those moments, we have to pay homage as well to the visiting team while remaining focused on what we’re trying to do.”
The Lakers have done well under the circumstances.
Although the Lakers lost to the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday night in their first game at Staples Center since Bryant’s death, they remained pleased with their effort after witnessing countless Bryant video tributes. The Lakers also were impressed with James’ impromptu speech to the sell-out crowd before tip-off.
The Lakers then responded with a 16-point win in Sacramento on Saturday. Despite the animosity between both teams that spanned three consecutive playoff matchups (2000-2002), the Kings played a Bryant tribute video that featured plenty of highlights from those series. Plenty of Lakers fans attended and yelled “Ko-be!” chants throughout the game.
Not only were the Lakers struck by the gestures. They became shook after matching Bryant’s career-high (81) in the first half in the same amount of minutes to match his jersey number (24). James noted that the Kings and Lakers combined for 242 points, which matched the jersey numbers of Kobe and Gianna.
“There was some weird stuff going on,” James said. “That’s just pretty cool. It’s a daily reminder.”
And with those reminders, the Lakers might feel joy and pain.
“There is no way one individual can do it on their own,” James said. “You have to lean on somebody in order to gain strength. That’s the only reason we’ve been able to get through it together.”
