Egan Bernal y los Granaderos del INEOS hicieron una fuerte defensa de la maglia rosa en la última jornada en la montaña del Giro de Italia.
Bernal cruzó la línea en segundo lugar en la cima de Alpe Motta, a solo 24 segundos de su rival más cercano Damiano Caruso. Eso significa que el colombiano aprovecha 1:59 en la última contrarreloj del domingo en Milán.
El equipo trabajó incansablemente para apoyar a Bernal en el día, repartiendo sus recursos por la etapa montañosa y negándose a entrar en pánico después de que Caruso atacara después de la primera de tres subidas.
Después del trabajo inicial de Filippo Ganna, Salvatore Puccio y Gianni Moscon se vieron obligados a entrar en acción cuando Caruso salió despejado junto a Romain Bardet en el largo descenso por el Passo San Bernadino.
Jhonatan Narvaez lo retomó antes de que Jonathan Castroviejo hiciera otro giro impresionante en el Splugenpass. Solo quedó un grupo de élite de la general, con la brecha con Caruso fijada en 40 segundos por conducción controlada.
Bernal lucía cómodo y en la última subida Daniel Martínez empujó con fuerza, recortando la brecha y finalmente distanciando al tercer clasificado, Simon Yates. Martínez incluso pudo terminar tercero en el día, subiendo al sexto lugar en la general.

«Estoy muy satisfecho con el resultado. Manejamos bien la situación. Finalmente tenemos dos minutos de ventaja para la contrarreloj de mañana. Estamos en una buena posición.
«No es la mejor (situación) tener el segundo en la general frente a ti con casi un minuto, pero todavía tenía tres compañeros e intenté usarlos, y llegar lo más fresco posible en la última subida, y también para mañana. Manejamos bien la situación pero fue difícil ”.

Egan Bernal and the INEOS Grenadiers put up a robust defence of the maglia rosa on the final day in the mountains at the Giro d’Italia.
Bernal crossed the line in second place on the Alpe Motta summit, just 24 seconds back on nearest rival Damiano Caruso. That means the Colombian takes an advantage of 1:59 into Sunday’s final time trial in Milan.
The team worked tirelessly to support Bernal on the day, spreading their resources across the mountainous stage, and refusing to panic after Caruso attacked following the first of three climbs.
After early work from Filippo Ganna, Salvatore Puccio and Gianni Moscon were forced into action as Caruso went clear alongside Romain Bardet on the long descent off the Passo San Bernadino.
Jhonatan Narvaez took it up before Jonathan Castroviejo put in yet another impressive turn on the Splugenpass. Only an elite GC group remained, with the gap to Caruso pegged at 40 seconds by controlled riding.
Bernal looked comfortable and on the final climb Daniel Martinez pushed hard, cutting the gap and eventually distancing third-placed Simon Yates. Martinez was even able to finish third on the day, moving up to sixth overall on the GC.

«I’m very satisfied with the result. We managed the situation well. Finally we have two minutes of an advantage for tomorrow’s time trial. We are in a good position.
«It’s not the best (situation) to have the second in the GC in front of you with almost one minute, but I still had three teammates and I tried to use them, and just arrive as fresh as possible in the last climb, and also for tomorrow. We managed well the situation but it was difficult.»
