LONDON, England – Serena Williams overcame an inspired start from Russian qualifier Margarita Gasparyan to move through her first round match at Wimbledon in straight sets on Monday, 6-4, 6-1.
With a gorgeous one-handed backhand and some ferocious down-the-line forehands, Gasparyan, who had never won a WTA-level match, gave Williams a very tough start – she jumped out to a 3-1 lead and even had a break point for 4-1 – but the World No.113 missed that opportunity with a missed forehand.
And from there it was all Williams. The No.1-seeded five-time Wimbledon champion won 11 of the next 13 games to run away with it in straight sets, finishing it off with an emphatic overhead into the stands.
Williams is now an incredible 59-1 in her career in first round matches at Grand Slams, the only loss coming against Virginie Razzano in the first round of the French Open in 2012, 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-3.
She also extended her Grand Slam winning streak to 22 matches – she’s going for her fourth straight Grand Slam title here after winning the 2014 US Open, 2015 Australian Open and 2015 French Open.
