COLUMBUS, Ohio – Thanks to the fastest goal in MLS Cup history and a follow-up strike moments later, the Portland Timbers won their first MLS Cup title on Sunday, besting Columbus Crew SC 2-1 at MAPFRE Stadium in Columbus.
Just 27 seconds into the match, Portland’s Diego Valeri capitalized on an error by Crew SC goalkeeper Steve Clark. The midfielder closed Clark down in his own box and slid in to re-direct the ball into an open net for the early opener.
Portland would add another in the seventh minute, when Rodney Wallace headed a Lucas Melano cross past Clark to put a stunned Columbus team – who argued the ball had gone out of bounds during the build-up – in a 2-0 hole.
Crew SC would pull one goal back in the 18th minute on a Kei Kamara turnaround blast, and the club threw everything forward in the waning moments of the game, but could not do enough to force extra time.
