SUNRISE, Fla. — Roberto Luongo made 39 saves for his 71st career NHL shutout when the Florida Panthers defeated the New York Rangers 3-0 on Saturday to set a franchise record with their eighth consecutive victory.
The Panthers also set a franchise record with their sixth consecutive home victory in front of a season-high crowd of 20,289 at BB&T Center, the third-largest crowd in their history.
Luongo’s third shutout of the season tied him for 11th place on the NHL’s all-time list with Lorne Chabot and Harry Lumley. He also broke his own Panthers record, set in March 2006, with his seventh consecutive victory.
Logan Shaw, Vincent Trocheck and Brandon Pirri scored for the Panthers (22-12-4), who moved back into first place in the Atlantic Division, one point ahead of the idle Montreal Canadiens.
The Panthers, who went 11-3-0 in December and set a franchise record for points in a month with 22, ended a seven-game losing streak against the Rangers. Florida hadn’t defeated New York since April 23, 2013.
