World No. 9 Petra Kvitova ended the run of qualifier Nicole Gibbs 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals of the BNP Paribas Open on Tuesday.

The Czech left-hander struck more than twice the number of winners than her American opponent (27 to 11) and won 18 of 25 points at net to tie up the match in just over two hours. With the victory, the two-time Wimbledon champion equals her best performance in Indian Wells (2013 QFs, l. to Kirilenko).

The 26 year old will vie for her place in the final four against 2014 runner-up Agnieszka Radwanska, who defeated 2010 champion Jelena Jankovic 6-3, 6-3.

Radwanska, the world No. 3, improved to 7-2 against her Serbian opponent. She saved seven of 10 break points during the 81-minute battle on Stadium 1.

It will be a much different scenario for the Pole against Kvitova, whom she trails 3-6 in their head-to-head meetings, though she won their most recent encounter: a tight three-setter at the 2015 WTA Finals in Singapore.

Simona Halep, the defending champion, advanced to the quarterfinals after her opponent, Barbora Strycova, retired trailing 3-6, 0-1. Halep awaits the winner of the battle between top seed Serena Williams and qualifier Kateryna Bondarenko.
